Top 10 Banksy locations in London, walking tour #1

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past 5 years you will probably heard of Banksy, the notorious street artist who has risen from gutter rat to art world luvvie in the past decade. Whilst Banksy’s identity is unknown, he is believed to hail from Bristol, UK where he started his graffiti career back in the 1980’s having decided his apprenticeship in the local bakery wasn’t going to get him where he wanted to be…

Increasingly becoming a ‘Marmite’ brand people seem torn between an appreciation for his anti-capitalist satirical street art and his rapidly filling coffers – Banksy artwork now regularly sells for tens of thousands of pounds. Just Google Team Robbo to read what one of his biggest critics has to say! The most expensive ever Banksy piece was Space Girl & Bird which fetched over £288,000 at Bonham’s auction house in London, roughly 20 times the predicted sale price.

But forget the Banksy prints, the pirated T-shirts and the bloke flogging pictures in Spittalfield’s market for £10, if you really want to appreciate some real Banksy street art you need to hit the streets and check out the real deal.

Below is part 1 of the top 10 Banksy locations in London, which, if viewed in order, also form a rather lovely 10 mile walking tour of Central, North and East London’s most colourful neighborhoods including Camden, Hackney, Stoke Newington and Dalston. Naturally if you’re coming from further afield you may want to check out some cheap places to stay whilst you’re in town…
