The Postgrad Crashpadder: reducing your research travel billWe delight in discovering the new ways – found by countless travelling legends out there – of making good use of Crashpadder. Now, it seems, we’re helping postgraduate students save money and find cheap student accommodation whilst they’re carrying out their research for a Masters or a PhD in far-flung libraries. There are lots of people out there only too happy to squeeze money out of hard-working and hard-up students, so we’re very pleased to be able to offer an affordable and honest alternative. Normally, travelling research students would be wrestling with a backwards university accommodation service, or scouring the internet for an elusive cheap hotel. Well – I mean “cheap” for certain values of “cheap”, to use a mathematical expression. No hotel is Crashpadder cheap. No hotel is Crashpadder quality. Instead, now students can find a place to stay that’s better and cheaper than a budget hotel or B&B. We’re also dashed easy to use. Instead of wading through the inefficiencies of a university accommodation service (making overseas telephone calls along the way) with Crashpadder it’s just a question of a few clicks. Per esempio: only last week, I was at a party at the Big Cheese’s house in London, thrown in honour of Crashpadder members, and I got talking to a delightful postgraduate student couple from the States. They had journeyed to the UK to conduct research at the British Library, amongst other esteemed institutions. When they were planning their stay, they had encountered a major obstacle in the form of the lamentably high cost of London accommodation. And lament they did. But then, behold, they were introduced to Crashpadder by a friend, and lo, there was much rejoicing. Not only did they find affordable accommodation in Stockwell, within easy reach of the library resources they needed, but they had a friendly host who was able to show them the best transport links - and he even brought them along to an awesome party! Where there was much rejoicing. Crashpadder is a great resource for students travelling to conduct research on their Masters or Phd. For a start, we have rooms that are well connected to many important research centres, but without the high prices that normally accompany such proximity. London itself is of course a global research hub, but it’s also within reach of the Universities of Oxford (50 minutes from London Paddington by railway, or 1 hour or so by coach from Victoria Coach Station) and Cambridge (50 minutes from London Kings Cross). We’ve also got loads of rooms within reach of the libraries and museums of New York and Edinburgh. Postgraduate students are arguably even more hard-up than undergrads, but we know that they invariably care and believe strongly in what they are doing, so it’s great that Crashpadder is able to help out. After all, like them, we believe very strongly in our mission: to put a bit of extra cash in the pockets of both travellers and hosts, and to let everyone have an enriching collaborative experience. Travellers win; hosts win; the environment wins. Who loses? Corporate hotel dinosaurs. Crashpadders like our PhD friends show us that more and more people are (often literally) waking up to the value provided by Crashpadder. Great rooms: friendly hosts: easily booked: cheap: no fuss. It’s so good you could write a thesis on it. Maybe. Read the rest of The Postgrad Crashpadder: reducing your research travel bill »
Budget business travel for SMEs, self-employed and contractors – how to save money when travelling on businessHave you ever travelled for your work and wished you weren’t paying over the odds? Perhaps your business, conservation project or festival has a legion of dedicated volunteers and interns from afar – only you can’t afford to put them all in a hotel? Crashpadder isn’t just about backpackers and city explorers (much as we do love them). We’re also popular with business travellers – airline staff, interior designers, agricultural journalists, trombone players. Now, I’m probably not going to argue that large, standardized, vapid corporations should use Crashpadder for their conference accommodation - after all, dinosaurs should stick together, right? But if you’re part of a deft, mobile, innovative, SME or self-employed practice, then Crashpads are a smart move. After all, you never know who you might end up networking with through a Crashpad, whereas in a budget hotel your best networking opportunity is probably the plasma TV telling you (contrary to all available evidence) how great the hotel is. For a lot of you, accommodation on business comes out of your own pocket – sometimes because you are the business. Crashpadder empowers you to keep the cost of accommodation down whilst giving you a comfy place to crash. Our hosts very often have WiFi which guests can use free so you can get that extra bit of work done too! Here’s an example: let’s say you need to stay over in London for a night because of two meetings on separate days. You could stay in this lovely Grade 2 listed Georgian house within a stone’s throw from Paddington Station (giving you easy access from Heathrow Airport) for £60. And that’s just if you’re feeling flush! We’ve got other London rooms for as little as £15 and New York rooms starting at $30.
I quite like this game. Let’s try it with Paris. It’s not the cheapest of places I grant you, but for €80 you can live in a lot more style (and closer to the centre) than you would do in an outer-Paris I could continue, but I should probably get on with some work. The fact is that we’re not just a realistic alternative for the business traveller looking for good value accommodation – we actually make good commercial sense. A business trip with a Crashpad is more likely to be memorable, collaborative and stimulating; you never know the inspiration you might find or the people you might meet. In the meantime, you’re paying less for your accommodation, so you’re actually putting yourself at a competitive advantage over your rivals. Of course, if your rivals are dinosaurs, it’s only a matter of time….
Covering the Mortgage – ways to pay when every penny countsMortgage repayments can make you worry like an insomniac polar bear who is also very worried. This article is about showing you how a bit of nimble financial footwork can win you some space ahead of the crowd, help you keep up your mortgage repayments with (literally) room to spare. One of the problems in a recession is that everyone is dispensing with things they don’t absolutely need. The cake has got smaller and we’re all fighting to defend the size of our slice: if you can’t do that by boosting your income, then you have to do it by cutting costs. But hold on just a cotton-pickin’ moment. Who said you can’t boost your income? There are tools at our fingertips which surivors of previous recessions and austerities never had. If you want to defend the size of your slice, make some extra cash and get cheaper, better accommodation when you’re travelling, then grab a wooden spoon courtesy of Crashpadder.com, and read on. In the Olden Dayes, Before We Had The Internet, it wasn’t really possible to rent out your spare room to business travellers or tourists without a lot of energetic needle-in-haystack searching and telephone calls. It never occurred to most of us to make a bit of extra cash by hosting people: What? That’s what hotels do isn’t it? How would I find them? How would they find me? It’s preposterous. Not any more. The thing is, it’s just so dashed easy to become a Crashpadder; and once you’ve given it a go, you can do as much or as little of it as you like. Whether you’re making £400 a month, or £40 a month, it usually just takes a few clicks, and then maybe 10 minutes to make up the bed. By the same token, if you’re on your travels – for business or pleasure – remember that you can find a cheap, comfy Crashpad at considerably better value than a hotel or B&B, whether that’s in London, New York, Sydney or Cape Town. Earn more; spend less; meet new people. Winner. So whether you’re trying to keep the wolf from the door, keep mortgage repayments going, don’t want to stop going out, or don’t want to scrap that skiing holiday in February, get on the case with Crashpadder and make sure it’s the hotel managers – not you – paying for the recession.
